Experiment No.: 1
Experiment Name:
Preparation of Series Testing Board for Testing Fan or Other Electrical Gadgets
Objective:
To design and prepare a Series Testing Board that allows safe testing of electrical appliances such as fans, irons, and bulbs before permanent installation.
Working Principle:
- The series lamp acts as a current limiter and safety device.
- When a faulty appliance is connected, the series lamp glows brightly (indicating high current or short circuit).
- If the appliance is healthy, the lamp may glow dim or not glow much depending on load current.
- Prevents damage to equipment and user during testing.
Application:
- Fault Detection
Helps detect short circuits or faults in electrical gadgets without causing a fire or blowing fuses. - Current Limiting
The series lamp limits current flow, protecting the user and the gadget from overload. - Pre-Installation Check
Useful for technicians to check gadgets before permanent connection in homes or industries. - Safety During Testing
Prevents damage to appliances or electric shock during initial testing of fans, irons, bulbs, etc. - Visual Indication
The glow of the series lamp shows the condition of the appliance — whether it is normal, faulty, or shorted.
Circuit Diagram:
Constructional Steps:
- All components (socket, switch, lamp holder, indicator) on the wooden/plastic board are fixed.
- The live wire from the plug to the switch is connected.
- From the switch, the wire to one terminal of the series lamp is connected.
- The other terminal of the lamp to one terminal of the testing socket is connected.
- The neutral wire from the plug should directly go to the other terminal of the socket.
- An indicator lamp is connected parallel across the socket to show power presence.
- All connections are double-checked and exposed wires are insulated properly.
Observation Table:
Sl. No. | Appliance Tested | Series Lamp Glow | Appliance Status |
1. | Table Fan | Dim | Ok |
2. | Iron | Dim | Ok |
3. | Faulty Bulb | Bright | Faulty |
4. | Shorted Wire | Very Bright | Dangerous |
Apparatus Used:
Sl. No. | Name of the Apparatus | Specification | Quantity | Maker’s Name |
1. | PVC Box | 6″x4″ | 1 | Priti Plast |
2. | Lamp Holder | 230 V, 6A | 1 | Pritam |
3. | Incandescent Lamp | 230 V, 100 Watt | 1 | Philips |
4. | 3 pin Socket | 230 V, 6A | 1 | Pritam |
5. | Switch | 230 V, 6A | 1 | Pritam |
6. | Indicator Lamp | 1 | Pritam | |
7. | Connecting Wires | 1.0 sq mm | As required | Havells |
Result:
The Series Testing Board was successfully prepared and used to test various electrical gadgets safely. It helps in early detection of faults without damaging the equipment or risking electric shock.
Conclusion:
A Series Testing Board is a simple, low-cost, and highly effective tool for initial testing of electrical appliances in workshops or homes. It prevents accidental damage and ensures technician safety.
